The Jets started off Day Two of the NFL Draft with yet another big trade. This time, the Jets moved up to the first pick of the third round to take Iowa running back Shonn Greene, who is a between-the-tackles runner. He rushed for over 100 yards in each game last year and totaled 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns overall. This could be a huge wake-up call to current Jets starting running back Thomas Jones, who has skipped voluntary workouts because he is apparently unhappy with his contract. (By the way, the contract is completely fair and Jones doesn't have a leg to stand on if he wants it restructured.) Greene could be a good complement to the explosive Leon Washington. They gave up a bunch to move up from No. 76 to No. 65 in the third round to get Greene, however. In addition to their third round pick, the Jets also gave up a fourth- and seventh-round pick. That leaves the Jets with just a sixth-round pick today. So, barring any other trades, the team will add just three players in this year's draft. But with one of those guys being Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez there really can't be any complaining.
The Patriots took North Carolina wide receiver Brandon Tate and South Florida linebacker Tyrone McKenzie with their two third-round picks. Barring a trade, New England won't draft again until the fifth round. Tate had major knee-surgery, but if he has fully recovered, this could be a great pick for the Pats. He could also be a factor in the return game. McKenzie sounds like a project, but he is a solid tackler, which is always good.
The Giants drafted Cal-Poly wide receiver Ramses Barden (who is 6-6 and 229 pounds) and Wisconsin tight end Travis Beckum, both in the third round. Barden is simply huge and Beckum is a receiving tight end. New York did trade up to get Barden, giving up their third- and fifth-round picks to the Eagles to move up six spots.
FOURTH-ROUND UPDATE: The Patriots traded cornerback Ellis Hobbs to the Eagles for two fifth-round draft picks. Hobbs would have been in a dog-fight for playing time at corner, so he became expendable. He was a solid kick returner, however, and could be missed in that role. Third-round pick Brandon Tate now could step in as kick returner. New England later traded those two fifth-round picks to the Ravens for their fourth-round pick and a sixth-round choice. So, with that fourth-round pick the Pats chose Penn State offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger, who will provide depth at guard and center.
The Giants went offense again with their fourth-round draft pick, selecting North Carolina State running back Andre Brown. He now joins a backfield that already includes Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, but does replace Derrick Ward, who went to Tampa.
