GIANTS DRAFT SAM HOUSTON STATE QB BOMAR TO BACK UP MANNING ... PLUS PATS & JETS NEWS

It's always big news when a team takes a quarterback in the NFL Draft - no matter the round - so the Giants selection of Sam Houston State signal-caller Rhett Bomar gets special treatment. Bomar is an interesting player and an even more interesting story. He started his college career at Oklahoma and was supposed to be the next big quarterback for the Sooners. But that all came to an end quickly when a scandal broke that connected Bomar to a car dealership that was paying him to basically never show up for work. After the story came out, he was kicked out of school and ended up at Sam Houston State. Bomar has owned up to his mistake, taking full blame for his actions, but some say he is way too cocky. Now, he is a New York Giant, as Big Blue took him with their fifth-round draft pick. Bomar will be the third-string QB in New York, as he will back up Eli Manning and David Carr. I guess this means the end of the line for former Kentucky QB Andre' Woodson, who was drafted last year to be third-string.

The Patriots drafted Louisville offensive tackle George Bussey in the fifth-round. Bussey is 6-3 and 301 pounds, but Scouts Inc. had him ranked as the 240th best player in the draft, so this might be a bit of a reach as the Pats made him the 170th overall selection.

Also, in other fifth-round draft news, the 49ers drafted Ball State QB Nate Davis and the Titans took Michigan State RB Javon Ringer with the final pick of the round.

SIXTH-ROUND UPDATE: I'll keep this brief as players drafted in the next two rounds will basically provide depth, although there is always the chance someone will develop into a star down the road. The Jets picked Nebraska guard Matthew Slauson (6-5, 316 pounds). He was an All-Big 12 selection and played under Jets offensive line coach Bill Callahan. The Giants took New Mexico cornerback DeAndre Wright (5-11, 198) for depth. The Patriots had two picks in the round and selected Hawaii center and long-snapper Jacob Ingram and Kentucy defensive tackle Myron Pryor. For what it's worth, Mel Kiper said on ESPN that Ingram is the best long-snapper in the draft.

Quaterbacks taken in the sixth round: Fresno State's Tom Brandstater to Denver (after a trade up); Rutgers' Mike Teel to Seattle; Texas A&M's Keith Null to St. Louis; Purdue's Curtis Painter to Indianapolis. Now, we're on to the seventh and final round.

SEVENTH-ROUND UPDATE: The Giants took South Carolina cornerback Stoney Woodson with their final pick. The Patriots, who had two picks, selected Kent State receiver Julian Edelman and Georgia Tech defensive tackle Darryl Richard. "Mr. Irrelevant" was South Carolina kicker Ryan Succop. He went to the Chiefs.
