Bristol Eastern 20, Newington 18The Bristol Eastern defense came up big once again, blocking a potential game-winning field goal by Newington's Spencer Parker from 43 yards out to take home a huge victory at Muzzy Field. Eastern improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the CCC South.
Lancers quarterback Dean Connelly played his best game of the year as the senior threw for 140 yards in the first half and finished 14-of-22 for 174 yards.
"We put a lot of the game into Dean Connelly’s hands," Eastern coach Paul Philippon told Mike Letendre after the game. "He responded."
Connelly hit WR Zak Smith (3 catches, 71 yards) for a 54-yard TD pass, his second touchdown of the season, in the game.
Berlin 64, St. Paul 50
That's right ... 64-50. St. Paul lost a game it had to have if the Falcons had visions of playing in the state playoffs. There was 54 combined points and 481 total yards in a first half that saw eight touchdowns scored on just 10 possesions. It was just as wild in the second half. But, in the end, St. Paul just couldn't stop the run.
"It’s tough because you practice all week focusing on stopping their run and to not be able to do it right from the start is difficult," St. Paul coach Jude Kelly told Johnny Burnham after the game.
Berlin rushed for a total of 469 yards in the game.
"All the credit has to go to Berlin. That’s a good football team," Kelly said.
Bulkeley 13, Bristol Central 8
Bristol Central couldn't break its six-game losing streak as Bulkeley stopped the Rams on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line with 30 seconds to go. Bulkeley got just its second win of the season, while Central falls to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the CCC South.
Here's Dave Greenleaf's account of the final drive:
In a game that featured a strong running attack by both clubs, the Rams appeared to be on the road to victory after Ben Wibly picked off a pass with just over seven minutes remaining to start a long march toward the endzone.
Starting at their own 33, the Rams marched deep into the Bulkeley red zone on 14 straight running plays that took all but 30 seconds off the game clock. The drive was kept alive when Gonzalez came up with a big four-yard gain on fourth-and-one at the Bulkeley 10 with a minute go.
But with four cracks to gain six yards and a potential game winning score, the Rams could come up with just five and left the field frustrated once again.
